Maslows theory is accepted and used broadly and applies effectively to the sports sector. Need is considered to be a critical factor that determines the benefits of stimulus for an individual. Based on this theory, Knowles also concludes that volunteerism is a means for serving society. Thus, the theory tends to emphasize on the egoistic aspect out of the various types of volunteer motivations. Through this theory, volunteers recognize that they confuse capabilities, freedom, and confidence to address chronical social problems in society. For instance, the application of this theory has led to an increase in the verse of volunteers at the Olympic Games from almost zero to 40,917 used during the 2000 Olympic Games held in Sydney.
